Music or Movies: Why Should You Consider A Subwoofer

There aren't many people who understand exactly what a subwoofer does. Sure, most know that it can produce lower notes and sounds, but it's not often clear why we'd actually need one.

In short, a subwoofer is a speaker that can reproduce the very lowest audio frequencies. They are specialised audio products that intensify the thrill and the action of your movies with even the most modest of audio systems. In general, they are quite big as they require a large cabinet to create low notes at a high volume.

If you love movies and music, you'll definitely want a subwoofer, especially if your sound system has speakers that are a bit on the smaller side. Good quality subwoofers produce more than just loud, one-note bass and can really enrich the sound of your music. When watching movies, a subwoofer is almost always a necessity because of the low frequency energy needed for movie sound effects.

Improper subwoofer placement is one of the biggest challenges you'll face when building your audio system. Oftentimes, we have to compromise between where a subwoofer will sound best and where it looks best. Aesthetics tend to take priority over acoustics, which can be frustrating for new subwoofer owners, as the placement could prevent it from operating at its best. Low notes are easily affected by obstacles such as corners, furniture and walls, which could ultimately lead to diminished sound quality.

KEF subwoofers use an ingenious equaliser that compensates for room placement issues by adjusting the low frequency output based on whether placement is near a wall, in a corner, or even in a cabinet. They even adjust for apartment living, allowing you to have great bass response while still being a good neighbour. These innovative features mean that we no longer have to compromise between acoustics and aesthetics.

KEF’s Wireless Subwoofer Adapter Kit gives you the freedom to place your subwoofer wherever you want. The KW1 Wireless Subwoofer Adapter Kit eliminates the need for a bulky cable connection from your amplifier to the subwoofer. Simply connect the KW1 Transmitter to the output of your amplifier, then connect the KW1 Receiver to your subwoofer. You can then place your subwoofer anywhere in your room, without compromising performance.

Most people think all that really matters is the size of the subwoofer – the bigger the better - but that isn’t necessarily true. Size shouldn’t always be your main consideration when choosing a subwoofer – the quality of the design and manufacturing are of equal importance. Subwoofers produce bass by moving air – just like any other speaker – so design and driver performance are critical to a great experience. Before you buy, it’s best to know exactly what you need: if you live in an average-sized home, you probably don't need a huge subwoofer. A 20 or 25 centimetre driver can fill an average room with deep bass while complementing the rest of your speakers. And believe it or not, a properly designed subwoofer featuring a driver as small as 15 centimetres can do a fantastic job of producing the low notes every movie and music fan wants to hear.

Connecting your subwoofer is generally quite simple: use the LFE output on your amplifier or receiver, or a pre-amp output if your receiver or amplifier doesn’t have an LFE output. LFE contains only the low frequencies. If your receiver doesn’t have an LFE or a pre-amp output, you can use the subwoofer’s high-level input by simply connecting the speaker output from the amp to the high-level input on the subwoofer. For more information on connecting your subwoofer, always consult the user manual.

The LS50 Wireless II makes subwoofer connection even easier. Simply connect the RCA cable to the SUB output on the LS50 Wireless II – there’s a SUB connector on both the primary and secondary speakers for ultimate convenience. Once connected to your LS50 Wireless II, you can control the subwoofer’s volume and crossover from the KEF Connect app.

Subwoofers can be a major enhancement to any music or movie system, and they’re not all that difficult to set up, especially with a quality product that has been designed to be user-friendly and high performing.
